Tonight: Public Hearing for Single-Stream Recycling in Bedford

The Bedford Town Board will hold a public hearing tonight for a series of code changes to allow for single-stream recycling, a process that allows for all recyclable items to be placed in a single container.

The proposed legislation calls for single stream to commence for residential properties on Sept. 1. Collectors who provide residential recycling recollection will have until Dec. 1 to comply with the change.

At the board's July 2 meeting, Supervisor Lee Roberts noted that the hope is the change could lead to an increase in recycling in town and that Bedford had a recycling rate of just 17 percent, according to video of the meeting. Roberts also noted that the topic has been the subject of discussion by the board before and that Bedford 2020 is also interested.

The hearing starts tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Bedford Town House, which is at 321 Bedford Road in Bedford Hills. For a copy of the proposed legislation, click here.
