Pound Ridge Go Green Day Planned for Spring 2014

Pound Ridge, NY  (October 4, 2013) - In June of 2013, the Pound Ridge Environmental Steering Committee was formed and tasked with creating an annual environmental day: “Pound Ridge Go Green Day.” Peter Avellino was appointed as the chair of the Pound Ridge Environmental Steering Committee, under the auspices of the Pound Ridge Conservation Board. The committee consists of individuals from key town boards/commissions and local organizations, subject-matter experts, and residents, all working in a collaborative effort.

“This will be a fun-filled family friendly event that brings together various ecological messages from our town boards/commissions and local organizations to educate residents on making responsible choices. The committee is working diligently to create an event full of activities and information to empower the residents to learn about reducing their carbon footprint, permaculture, recycling, energy alternatives and energy savings ideas, protecting their environment and drinking water, as a few examples,” states Avellino. The inaugural event is being planned for Spring 2014. The committee is researching venue options and will be confirming the date in the weeks ahead.

Avellino originated the idea and presented it to the Conservation Board and the Sustainability Task Force last May 2013 to get their support. He received input from the both groups, including input from the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy, which he included in his presentation to the Town Board in June 2013. In addition to the event, Avellino proposed, in the presentation as future long-term goals of the committee, to create a website as an online presence for resources and ongoing communication with the residents, offer additional education programs throughout the year, and develop and implement an Environmental Action Plan for the Town. Town Supervisor Gary Warshauer was in favor of initiating the committee to create the first annual event including Councilmen Lyman and Falco having no objection, however, Town Board members Ali Boak and Dan Paschkes stated that while they thought it was a good idea, they did not feel that the Town should have any responsibility for nor has the time to take on an initiative like this.

As per the request of Supervisor Warshauer, after granting approval to move this initiative forward, the Environmental Steering Committee will be presenting a status update of their work to date at a future Supervisor’s Forum. At that time, the committee hopes to gain full support from the Town Board to embrace this initiative and allow the committee to continue their work beyond holding the first annual event in Spring 2014 in order to fulfill its long-term goals for the Town.
