Owner's Family: Angelina Jolie Did Not Buy Island in Mahopac

The Internet, and many local Facebook feeds, are on fire with news that Angelina Jolie has purchased an island—in Mahopac—for Brad Pitt. But the rumors are wrong, according to the property owner's daughter.

Multiple reports (including this one, this one and this one) claim Jolie purchased Petra, a heart-shaped island located in Lake Mahopac, as a birthday present for Pitt. He's turning 50 next month.

"They're not true," Mahopac resident Donna Massaro told Patch.

The island is reportedly home to three structures, including a main residence inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's designs. Joe Massaro, a sheet metal contractor, owns it.

"It didn't sell yet," Donna Massaro said, adding that her father put the property on the market "just to see."

As far as Donna Massaro knows, Angelina Jolie has never been to Mahopac, nevermind the island. Donna Massaro owns the Freight House Cafe, located in the heart of the hamlet, and she received a phone call there Monday from the TV show Extra.

"I don't know who is writing these stories," she said with a laugh.

At 11 acres, the island was for sale for $20 million, according to this 2012 Huffington Post story. The main residence is called The Massaro House, according to this Wikipedia entry

"The house is placed on the exact location chosen by Wright in 1959, when he designed it," reads this description of the home on Ahalife.com. "Main residence is 5,000-square feet and has decks totaling an additional 2,000-square feet, including the largest cantilever deck ever designed by Wright. All woodwork custom-built to Wright’s specifications from African mahogany."
