The #2 seeded Orioles defeated the #1 seed Rockies on Wednesday night between the raindrops to capture the Lewisboro Baseball Association AAA Championship. In a game that was interrupted for 20 minutes by thunder and ended amidst a torrential downpour, both teams played and acted like champions. The AAA championship game capped off a fun and competitive season of baseball for this 5th grade division that saw the season end in a three way tie for first between the Rockies, Orioles and Rangers.

The game was scoreless following a flawless first inning inning in the field for both teams when the Orioles exploded in the 2nd for 5 runs capped by a triple to the gap from Sean Nolan, who never stopped running to score on the throw after driving in Matt Shapiro and Zach Beresin ahead of him. Dan Johnston pitched 2 scoreless innings for the Orioles including 4 strikeouts and some solid defense behind him. The Orioles scored 4 more runs in the 3rd inning on hits from Richard Jones, Dan Johnston, Brendan Carroll and a big triple from Charlie Murphy who was called up from AA to fill-in an Orioles lineup depleted by two; Ryan Kingston and Koby Weston, who both made great contributions throughout the season with their bats and their gloves, were forced on to the disable list by a broken finger and an illness respectively.

The Rockies scored a run in their half of the third inning on an RBI single from Joey Correlli, but the Orioles added two more in the 4th inning when Dan Johnston crushed a thunderous shot over the fence for a home run to extend their lead. The Rockies, who threatened throughout the game, were on the verge of a big inning in the 4th having scored 2 runs with a man on second when Chris Orifici hit a tremendous shot over the head of centerfielder Sean Nolan who chased the ball down making an astounding stretched out catch to end the inning and rob the Rockies of a big rally.

After thunder delayed the game for the required 20 minutes before the umpires deemed it safe to resume play, the Orioles returned in the top of the 5th with Triples from Sam Sweeney and Charlie Murphy adding three more runs. Brendan Carberry pitched a scoreless 5th inning for the Orioles. Rockies pitcher, Colin Walsh pitched a 1-2-3 inning with 2 strikeouts in the 6th, but the skies opened up in the bottom of the 6th forcing the umpires to end the game with the Orioles ahead 14 – 3 earning them the AAA Championship.
