Statement from Save K-L Schools

As we sit here tonight following the BOE vote, we are sure all of you are feeling like we are - that although the vote was no surprise, it is certainly still a shock. However, upon reflection we should be very proud of everything we did in such a compressed and aggressive timeframe:

We accomplished our mission: to rally the community against this process. We gathered 1,060+ petition signatures; created an incredibly vibrant social media community of 650+ Facebook members; employed Twitter, YouTube, and blogs; and built a communication platform with our saveklschools.org website garnering over 2,000 visitors. We made our voices heard through everything from flyers to yard signs to placards, handed out brochures, and ran information booths across the community. We rallied the press, attended legal meetings, met with political officials, and perhaps most importantly, we spoke neighbor-to-neighbor. There is not much more we could have done!

We have learned two important things in this process. One, we are lucky to live in a community full of talented, caring people who are proud of Lewisboro and want what's best for it. And two, that unfortunately these people do not matter to the Board of Education. Over the protest of thousands, five people put the nails in the coffin of Lewisboro Elementary: Charles Day. Stephanie Tobin. Peter Treyz. Richard Stone. Janet Harckham.

We believe that closing LES is the wrong decision for the community in both short term and long term. However, as parents, we now need to rally around our children who stand to lose the most if their beloved elementary school is boarded up in June. We need to ensure the final redistricting plan has our best interests in mind. We need to ensure all transition efforts are seamlessly integrated and our voice is actively heard through this process. We need to ensure the teachers and administrators do not loosen the academic focus this year and that we apply pressure where needed. We need to ensure none of our children fall through the cracks. We will use this community to continue the dialogue on these events and as a forum to communicate key activities and decisions that we should all be aware of with the BOE and our school administration.

In addition - we will continue to push our administration and our board to pursue a better path for our community and our children. Through our new Facebook group, KL Vision, we will pursue this both tactically and strategically. There are budget votes, board elections, and many other opportunities for us to affect change going forward! Please request access if you are interested in joining us in this endeavor. Don't lose hope on how you can help to create a strong and healthy district for your children!

Thank you to everyone who has participated. We are honored to be your neighbors!
