Bedford Central Picks New K-5 Math Program

The new one is Math in Focus, which will be rolled out for next year.

Bedford Central's five elementary schools will see a new math program next fall, with district officials choosing to go with Math in Focus.

The pick of the new program was announced at Wednesday's school board meeting by Drew Patrick, the district's assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Math in Focus, which is published by Houghton Mufflin, will replace Math Trailblazers, which the district has used for a decade, according to Patrick.

Feedback was gathered from parents and staff had a role in shaping the process leading to the selection, Patrick explained.

Patrick said the staff gave “a tremendous amount of thought to this.”

The decision to switch to Math in Focus is driven by changes in technology over the decade. The new program will include features such as a web-based component and more tools for SMART Boards.

The search for a new program has its origins in a 2010 evaluation of the current program, Patrick explained. Other factors for changing the program include new common core standards from the state.
