Bedford Schools to Host Safety Talks

Less than a week since the mass shooting in Newtown, CT, Bedford Central's Superintendent will hold community discussions on the district's safety.

In the wake of the mass school shooting in Newtown, CT, Bedford Central schools Superintendent Jere Hochman will hold two information sessions on district safety on Thursday.

Hochman, in an email to the community earlier this week, wrote that the meetings' purposes are to "discuss school safety, to listen to and answer questions."

The first meeting will be held at Bedford Village Elementary School at 9:30 a.m., while the second meeting will be at Fox Lane High School's theater at 7 p.m., according to Hochman.

In addition, Hochman explained that parent-teacher organizations that represent the district's schools may set aside time during their next meetings to address safety

When my child attended primary school in Queens, 24 years ago, only one door to the school remained unlocked and a security guard sat at sign-in desk right in front of the door. NO one was admitted access without him first calling the office and, if they were known and had business in the office, was met by that person. If a parent was there to pick-up a student, the child was escorted to the security desk by an aid. Deliveries were made well before or after school hours. Ours was a small neighborhood school and I have to believe that every school in NYC had those same security measures in place just like ours did over 24 years ago. If you think about it, there has not been a mass killing in a NYC school. I attribute this to taking progressive/aggressive measures and, family living in tight quarters. Children mostly don't have a bedroom to themselves or outdoor area or garage to conceal major firearms.
