K-L Board Members Take Oaths; Day, Schiff Picked for Leadership

Meanwhile, board members agree to serve on school closure task force committee.

Kicking off the 2013-14 school year, Katonah-Lewisboro's school board met Wednesday for its annual reorganizational meeting, which included administering the oaths of office to trustees whose terms started and in selecting a leadership team.

The meeting started with incumbent Peter Treyz being sworn in for another term, following by newcomers Jeffrey Holbrook and Richard Stone. The trustees were each elected to 3-year terms in the May election, which officially started on Monday. An oath was then given to Jacob Goldstein, a rising senior at John Jay High School and the board's non-voting student member. Goldstein, who goes by Kuba as his nick name, was picked by his peers in the Campus Congress.

The school board also voted unanimously for its new leadership team, choosing Charles Day for president and Marjorie Schiff for vice president.

“This is going to be a very interesting year,” Day said, adding that he thinks it will be very eventful. Day also served as vice president for the previous school year.

Schiff said that she's “looking forward to working with everybody.”

Oaths were also given to Superintendent Paul Kreutzer and the district's three assistant superintendents.

Stone and Holbrook replace Mark Lipton and Peter Breslin, whose terms expired on Sunday. However, Breslin did not leave the scene. With nine years of board service behind him, he chose to speak during the meeting's public comment portion about the district's consideration of closing one or two elementary schools down the line, and issue that will be reviewed by a task force.

On the task force issue, board members opted to allow Schiff, Stone and fellow trustee Janet Harckham to serve on the group, which is looking for more people to join. The new group will pick up where a previous committee end with findings that were presented last month.

Video clips are attached of the oaths being given to Treyz, Holbrook, Stone and Goldstein for their board seats, plus the oaths for Day as president and Schiff as vice president.
