K-L Releases Elementary Attendance Map

As part of its communication with the public over the potential closure of an elementary school, the Katonah-Lewisboro School District has released a map showing where attendance falls for the four schools.

The map represents clusters of enrollment for an elementary area, Superintendent Paul Kreutzer told Patch. It has a key showing different icons that correspond to each school. Meadow Pond Elementary School (MPES) has green dots, stars with red outlines are for Katonah Elementary School (KES), blue dots represent Increase Miller Elementary School (IMES) and brown triangles represent Lewisboro Elementary School (LES).

The map, when analyzed along with public online data and Westchester County's mapping data that includes zip codes and landmarks, shows that KES kids live overwhelmingly in the Katonah hamlet, with some in northwestern Pound Ridge. IMES students, the analysis shows, live primarily in Goldens Bridge, although some reside in northeastern Katonah and a small part of North Salem. It also shows that LES students reside in Cross River, Waccabuc, South Salem and northeastern Pound Ridge, while MPES kids live in South Salem and Vista.

The depiction has some anomalies, however, with some markings outside of the district boundaries. Kreutzer was not sure why they were depicted.

District officials are now giving particular attention on whether to close LES, it was announced at Thursday's school board meeting. The reasons include because KES and IMES have more capacity, and because closing MPES or KES would lead to more disruption of moving kids through redistricting because they are on the district's edges.

The school board will hold a public hearing on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at John Jay Middle School's auditorium. A high-quality image of the map can be found on the district's website.
