Montfort Academy to Say Goodbye to Katonah

A move to southern Westchester will allow for a 'more numerous and diverse' student body, staff members say.

Next fall, students at Montfort Academy will begin classes at a new location in Mount Vernon.

The school, currently located at 99 Valley Road in Katonah, will relocate to the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul in the Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon in time for the start of classes in September.

"Our move from northern Westchester to southern Westchester will allow Montfort to reach a more numerous and diverse prospective student body," Chairman Richard Greco said in a statement. "Relocating will also allow more students to take advantage of Montfort's affordable, classical Catholic education. Fleetwood is a beautiful section of the City of Mount Vernon, and we are excited to becoming part of a vibrant, active parish community with genuine pastoral leadership."

The building at Saints Peter and Paul Church, which was founded in 1929, offers 10 classrooms. It's close to several train stations on the Metro-North line, and students will have access to sports fields in the area, the school said in a press release.

"We are excited to welcome the Montfort Academy to Saints Peter and Paul," Don Alleva, parish manager at Saints Peter and Paul, said. "Montfort has established itself as an authentically Catholic high school that provides a safe and caring environment to students of all backgrounds and helps form their bodies, minds, and souls. It has achieved an enviable track record of academic excellence, spiritual formation, and college placement."

For the 2013-2014 school year, about 75 students are enrolled in Montfort, which is an independent Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of New York. The school—which costs about $9,500 in tuition, plus fees—prides itself on providing a "classical" education. It was established in 2001.

The academy will host several open houses this month: From 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 7, from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 9, and from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 11 and 12. They will be held at Saints Peter and Paul, located at 129 E Birch Street in Mount Vernon.

Okay but let's focus on the charter of the BOE. The Board of Education believes its primaryRead More responsibility should focus on creating an educational environment that will help our students become knowledgeable individuals, problem-solvers, quality producers, effective communicators, wholesome individuals, collaborative workers, ethical individuals, life-long learners, and responsible, accepting and involved citizens.
