White Plains to Talk School Funding, Taxes

Public forum slated for Thursday evening.

When it comes to prepping for White Plains schools' finances, the second time may be the charm.

After an initial public forum on the 2013-14 budget was postponed last week due to foul weather, academic leaders will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the upcoming budget.

The meeting will take place at White Plains High School in room B-1.

The forum will allow parents, community members, students and teachers to sound off on the fiscal plan, which will be finalized and voted on this coming May.

White Plains schools are bracing for another difficult budget year, as school officials say they will need to consider an estimated $2 million in budget cuts to remain under the two-percent tax cap in 2013-14.

Proposed cuts in federal aid and increased pension costs are expected to again be two of the largest obstacles the district faces for next year.

What's important to you this budget season? Anyone planning on attending tonight's forum to voice concerns?

When was the new bond issue passed? That was certainly a lot of money? Now there is another budget problem.
