Pearl River Defeats Tappan Zee, Wins Class A Sectional Championship

Pearl River relied on its defense to beat Tappan Zee, 39-33, in the Section 1 Class A girls basketball championship Sunday at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.

The Pearl River girls defeated Tappan Zee, 39-33, to capture the Section 1 Class A Championship at the Westchester County Center in White Plains Sunday night.

"It's unreal," said Pearl River senior Christa Scognamiglio, who also started on the Pirates' last championship team in 2008 as an eighth grader. "It doesn't even feel like we got it. It's such an amazing feeling. I'm so happy for us. I'm so proud of us."

Pearl River senior guard Allison Cook led all scorers with 15 points. Scognamiglio finished with 10 for the Pirates (20-2).

Scognamiglio was named the tournament MVP. She and Cook made the all-tournament team along with Erica Richards and Kristen McLaughlin of Tappan Zee, Maeve Parahus of Albertus Magnus and Jamie Bucci of Sleepy Hollow.

Seniors Richards and Devona Paul each scored eight points to lead Tappan Zee (19-3).
