Harvey and Wooster Split in Saturday Contests

It was win one, lose one for Harvey against Wooster Saturday.

Harvey Girls Lacrosse Gets by Wooster

The Harvey girls lacrosse team got back on track Saturday by defeating the Wooster School 14-10. The Lady Cavaliers started out fast and strong attacking the Wooster goalie and sustaining pressure in the offensive zone.

With Harvey up by six goals to start the second half, Wooster began to battle back, but goaltender Ariana Weaver helped the Lady Cavs hold the lead with 12 saves. Harvey was led by the relentless efforts of senior Brittany Smith who had six goals and an assist.

Coach Greg Janos gave kudos to Smith. “Brittany is a leader, a take control kind of player,” said the coach. “When the game is close, she wants the ball.  She does not want to lose. You can't teach that type of attitude."

Senior Audrey Rowe continued to stay hot, scoring two goals. Coach Janos called Rowe “a game changer.” He said, “Audrey plays hard and most likely has the hardest shot in the league.  Nobody wants to get in front of it."

Seventh-grader Sophia Scarsella, a newcomer to the team, had a standout performance, netting two goals and assisting in another. Coach Janos likes what Scarsella brings to the team. “Sophia comes to LAX every day ready to work and she’s a player to keep your eye on over the next few years."

Coach Janos said he was glad the team could hang on and win the game. “It wasn't our best game, but the girls stood together as a family and refused to lose.  I'm proud of their determination and resilience when the game gets close."

The Lady Cavaliers look to improve on their 4-2 record next week and will play on the road for the next four games.

Harvey Girls Tennis Loses To Wooster

Harvey girls varsity tennis team Saturday was blanked 6-0 by Wooster School in Danbury, Conn in a match cut short by rain.

The#1 singles match was a battle as Harvey’s Baily Hersh did a great job making her opponent work for her win. “Baily had a lot of great rallies, shots and serves,” said Coach Christine Cahill.

Another stand out player was Sage Meyers who was playing in her first singles match for Harvey. Coach Cahill liked what she saw from Meyers. “Sage did a fantastic job with some nice rallies and shots,” said the coach.

Wooster won a rain shortened #2 singles match and neither team had the chance to play its #1 doubles team as the rain sent everyone home. Harvey would get no points from its doubles teams, but the Lady Cavaliers saw another first as Giana Yang and Eve O’Brien played in their first doubles match for points as partners.

The Lady Cavaliers play their next match Wednesday, May 7 at home when they will host the Forman School on the courts of Katonah Memorial Park.
