Harvey Boys Lacrosse and Girls Tennis Win Season Openers

Beautiful spring weather brought out the best in the players on Harvey's boys lacrosse and girls tennis teams

The Harvey School boys varsity lacrosse team opened its season Wednesday at home with a 13-1 victory against Marvelwood School. A young, but gritty Harvey team proved too much for Marvelwood, as the Cavaliers opened the first half of the contest with 11 unanswered goals and never looked back.

Sophomore Javen Stepp-Davis with four goals and junior Tom Gattuso with three teamed up on the attack, along with talented freshman Sam Bocklett who added a goal and an assist, and veteran sniper Keith Lambert who tallied two goals. Gattuso added two assists, bringing his point tally to a game leading five.

Newcomers Alex Appel and Sacha Kantor each went 1 for 1 with goals and assists, and sophomore attackman Jovell Forsythe scored a career first goal during regular season play.

Marvelwood’s lone score came in the third before the Cavaliers tacked on their last two scores in the fourth.

Goalkeeper Tyler Gadigian was very sharp in the net, leading a dominating defense with co-captain Tom Smith. Only tested with one shot in the first half, goalie Brian Silva made his keeper debut maintaining dominance in the second half of play, allowing only one goal.

Harvey coach Jason Hill saw the game as a great opportunity to allow all players a great chance to run the field. He described his team is a young squad “with huge potential to make waves in this year’s 2014 spring HVAL & Western New England D2/3 season.”

When the Cavaliers play again, they will host the Brunswick School Monday, April 7.

Meanwhile, Harvey’s girls varsity tennis team opened the season Wednesday with a 5-2 win over Marvelwood School.

Harvey’s singles players, juniors Baily Hersh (10-7), Carly Kaplan (10-3) and Alexis Palmer (10-2) and freshman Natalia Looney (10-4) won their matches. Harvey picked up its fifth point when doubles teammates Palmer and Looney defeated their Marvelwood counterparts 8-0.

Coach Christine Cahill said the opening victory came as a result of hard work on the part of the players. Cahill said the coaches were pleased with the effort of the girls. “We are so proud of every one of our players; each one of our girls fought hard and represented The Harvey School spectacularly in both performance and sportsmanship.”

Coach Cahill likes what she sees on the court. “The girls are really coming together as a team, and with the help of our captains, Baily Hersh and Carly Kaplan, they are only going to grow more with experience.”

The next match for the Harvey team is Saturday, April 5, at The Forman School.
