Harvey Boys Lose to Briarcliff in TZ Tourney Tip Off

Harvey boys gave it a valiant try but came up short in TZ Tournament Tip Off game against Briarcliff.

Harvey’s boys basketball team will play in the consolation game Saturday after losing to Briarcliff High School 66-55 in the tip off game of the Tappan Zee Basketball Tournament Friday. It was a bittersweet homecoming for Harvey’s coach Dom Narcisco who returned to the court of tournament host Tappan Zee High School where the Cavaliers’ second-year coach had played his high school ball from 1994-1998.

The Cavaliers knew they were in for a challenge as they were squaring off against a Class A public school in Briarcliff. Harvey hung tough early on, but the Briarcliff Bears were getting many easy buckets inside and getting points off offensive rebounds. Briarcliff was also very aggressive defensively, putting a lot of pressure on Harvey’s ball-handlers, especially junior guard Ricky Hicks, who was held to just 11 points. Briarcliff had a 10-point lead at halftime. The Bears led by 19 at the end of the third quarter, outscoring Harvey 19-11, but the Cavaliers cut the deficit to 11 with a strong fourth quarter as they poured in 21 points while holding the Bears to 14.

Harvey’s freshman guard Evan Roteman, taking advantage of a chance to play big minutes, was the game’s high scorer with 23 points. Three Briarcliff players scored in double figures. Sean Crowley led the Bears with 19. Jackson Wexler scored 17 while Josiah Cobbs chipped in with 10.

Briarcliff will play Tappan Zee for the tournament championship Saturday at 8 p.m. as the host team defeated Valley Central 72-32 in the late game Friday. Harvey and Valley Central will battle in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
