Harvey boys take a third straight HVAL title

Harvey Boys Tennis Wins HVAL Title –Again

Harvey’s boys tennis team made it three consecutive Housatonic Valley Athletic League championships with an 8-1 victory over Forman Saturday at Katonah Memorial Park. With the victory, Harvey finishes 14-0 on the season, the second undefeated season in the past three years for the Cavaliers.

Alec Roslin (11-1 on the year) kicked off the day with a convincing 10-1 win at #1 singles, followed by Harry Solomon (13-1 this season) with a solid 10-3 win. Zach Schwartz (14-0) battled to pull out a 10-5 win to cap an undefeated season. Then eighth-grader David Weiner (11-2) continued the Harvey roll with an impressive 10-3 victory at #4 singles. For the four seniors, Co-captains Solomon and Krosser, and #3 and #6 singles players Schwartz and Fox, this year’s team victory was a culmination of an amazing four-year run of three titles and one second place finish. Coach Marty Bernstein said the title game victory was just another case of his team’s consistency and mental toughness. “The Harvey singles players 1 through 6 simply did not make many errors, the hallmark of this team,” said Coach Bernstein.

The doubles teams of Roslin and Solomon and Weiner and Tyler Levy closed out the day with victories over their counterparts from Forman.

Harvey Girls Lacrosse Edged Out for Title

The Harvey girls lacrosse team lost the title game of the Housatonic Valley Athletic League playoffs Saturday in Katonah for the second straight year as the Lady Cavaliers fell to Watkinson 9-6.

Watkinson jumped out to an early three goal lead, but the Lady Cavs did not let the early deficit faze them as they battled right back into the game. Sydney Lunder, the team's eighth-grade attacker, put Harvey on the score board with a snipe from the center hash mark. Senior Brittany Smith followed with the first of her two goals, scoring one while being knocked to the ground. Harvey coach Greg Janos called Smith’s play “the goal of the year." He said, “As pretty as her goal was, it came as a result of her hard work and determination to get her team fired up and back into the game.”

Harvey continued to battle and got another stand out performance from Ariana Weaver in the pipes. Weaver made 15 saves on the day while also showing off her defensive talent by leaving her crease at times to help the defense, picking off Watkinson passes and running the ball down field. Weaver’s performance pleased her coach. "Ariana was phenomenal,” said Coach Janos. “There wasn't a single thing more I could have asked of her."

At the start of the second half the Lady Cavaliers were behind by four goals, but there was no sign of quit in the team. Watkinson came out strong and was able to score a goal off a free shot due to a defensive penalty putting the visitors up 7-2.  The next four goals all belonged to the Lady Cavs as they battled their way back to get within one of tying the game.

Sammi Aloi buried two goals and fellow senior Lily Brouwer also added one in Harvey’s valiant comeback effort. Watkinson suddenly found itself only being up by one with eight and a half minutes remaining. Despite an all-out effort by Harvey on defense, Watkinson was able to put two more shots passed Weaver with less than three minutes left and then ran out the clock to seal the win and claim the HVAL title.

Coach Janos said it was a tough loss to take, but he is proud of the team’s effort and the character the Harvey girls showed on the field. “They played with pride, heart and a no quit attitude. They made Watkinson earn every goal they scored.  I'm positive that if there was another 5 minutes left on the clock, there would have been a different outcome.”

On Wednesday, the lacrosse team will officially end the season with a game at home against Wooster to honor the seniors.
