Harvey Girls Lacrosse Celebrates Seniors Game with Win

There were cheers and tears at the final game played by Harvey's solid core of seniors on the girls varsity lacrosse team Wednesday.

It was the final lacrosse game of their high school career Wednesday as the Lady Cavaliers started their senior night off by honoring the three seniors from the visiting Wooster School. Harvey’s three senior captains, Lily Brouwer, Julia Peraglia and Brittany Smith presented the Wooster seniors with flowers before the start of the game and wished them much success in the future at college.

Once the game whistle blew, both teams went to work and battled hard for the last victory of the year.  Harvey struck first but its goal was quickly answered by a Wooster goal, setting the back and forth intense pace for the rest of the game.

Tied at 5 at the half, both teams came out of the intermission swinging. The second half continued to be a heavy weight fight with both teams matching goal for goal.  At an improvised officials' timeout with 5:48 left in the game, the score was tied at 7. That break gave Coach Greg Janos the time he needed to settle the girls. He said, “I reminded the seniors that it was their last game and they needed to leave it all on the field.”  The message was well received and the seniors took control, scoring six goals in three and a half minutes to run away with the game 12-7.

Senior Audrey Rowe took the message to heart and scored four goals, followed up by two goals from Lily Brouwer.  Also scoring on the day was Brittany Smith, putting in three while Sophia Scarsella, Julia Peraglia, and Sammi Aloi each added a goal.

Coach Janos called the contest “an intense game that both teams wanted to send their seniors off with a win, and it showed. Nobody was backing down.”

Securing the victory might have been the easier task for Janos than dealing with the emotions of having to say goodbye to the eight seniors who played their final game for Harvey.

“This group of seniors has set the bar high for the future of the girls lacrosse program. I'm excited about the future dynasty that this group of young women has built a solid foundation for,” Janos said.

Harvey was the #1 seed in the HVAL playoffs this season, but the Lady Cavaliers lost the title game last Saturday at home to Watkinson 9-6.
