Harvey Middle Schoolers Raise Money for Wounded Vets

Four sixth-graders from the Harvey Middle School joined forces on their day off from school Monday, Veterans Day to hold a bake sale to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Katonah residents Lexi Wierdsma, Maelani Groff, Lily Drude and Emma Spada raised more than $445 for the WWP.

Working from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of Weinstein's Pharmacy in Katonah, the girls sold baked goods donated by themselves and their families and friends as well as some special treats provided by Susan Lawrence Catering in Chappaqua.

This annual event was started three years ago by Emma Spada and her mother Tricia Freeman when Emma was a fourth-grader at Increase Miller Elementary School. Mrs. Freeman said the project was started “as a way to connect the day off from school to the meaning of the holiday.” Mrs. Freeman said for the last two years Emma had help from her IMES friends, but this year, Emma decided to do the event with her Harvey friends.

When they wrapped up the sidewalk sale, the girls brought the leftover baked goods to the American Legion Hall in Katonah for the veterans assembled there to enjoy.
