Harvey Varsity Teams Have Terrific Tuesday

Another busy day of Harvey varsity action Tuesday sees four teams get wins.

Harvey Girls Lacrosse Road Warriors

Harvey’s girls lacrosse team won its third straight on the road Tuesday beating Master's of Conn. 12-5.

The game started out very evenly matched but Master's found a way to go up two goals early on against the Lady Cavs. Coach Greg Janos called a timeout to regroup his team after a long road trip to West Simsbury, Conn. Once play resumed, the Lady Cavaliers ran off their bus legs and took command of the game.

Harvey had six different goal scorers with Sophia Scarsella, Sammi Aloi, and Lily Brouwer each getting three. Aliya Mayers, Julia Peraglia, and Brittany Smith added a goal apiece. Ariana Weaver stood strong in front of the net and made 10 saves.

When the regular season this weekend, Harvey will have played five games on the road leading into the post season matchups. Coach Janos says the long stretch of road games will not be a problem for his team. “I have all the confidence in these girls. They can handle the work load and they want to play. They're hungry. This is when all the preseason workouts pay off.”

The girls travel to Forman Wednesday and then to Cheshire Saturday.

Harvey Softball Wins Third In a Row

Harvey softball pitcher Selena Cummings of Ossining made it back to back one-hitters in her last two starting assignments, but the sophomore was outstanding at the plate too, collecting three hits and knocking in eight runs to lead the Lady Cavaliers to an 18-2 win over Monfort Tuesday.

Cummings, coming off her one-hit victory last Friday over Storm King, struck out four Monfort batters in Tuesday’s game called after four innings. She allowed two runs.

Harvey took advantage of the difficulties the Monfort pitcher had in throwing strikes. Grace Tow of Pound Ridge walked four times while Tessa Knorr and Olivia Lindsay each had three bases on balls. Lindsay, who also had Harvey’s other hit, had four RBI.

In their last four games, including an 18-17 walk off loss to Poughkeepsie Day School before their three-game winning streak, the Lady Cavaliers have scored an average of 14 runs a game.

Harvey is now 4-3 on the season.

Harvey Rugby Downs New Rochelle

Harvey’s rugby team defeated New Rochelle High School Tuesday 29-14 in a pivotal league matchup in Katonah.

The match started well for the hosts as Harvey pressured New Rochelle early on, controlling play for the first 15 minutes.  New Rochelle’s defense held and Harvey could not take advantage of possession deep in Huguenot territory.

In the 18th minute of play the Cavaliers turned the ball over deep in New Rochelle territory and were burned as the quick backline capitalized and a New Rochelle rugger broke the line for an 80- meter score.  Play would continue with a back and forth flow with neither team able to string multiple phases together.

In the last minute of play in the half, Harvey finally broke through following a New Rochelle penalty. Off the second phase, Christian Artuso found teammate Ilam Gressel who found points. Harvey missed the conversion and trailed 7 to 5 heading into the break.

The second half the Cavaliers started to click. In the 38th minute, following a New Rochelle turnover, Jay Haendler broke free and dotted down to give Harvey its first lead. Harvey kept the pressure on New Rochelle, and following a punishing run by center Reed Feldman, Artuso broke a gap and scored to widen the lead to 10 points in the 45th minute.

The next quarter of play saw some nice forward movement as the pack started to make an impression at the rucks, allowing Artuso and Charlie Seider to run the offense.  Artuso once again found the tryzone in the 62nd minute to increase Harvey’s lead. In the 69th minute, the forwards were justly rewarded and senior prop Robbie Palladino bulled his way into the tryzone for a score. New Rochelle would run in a try in stoppage time, but it was too little too late as Harvey maintained its lead and won the match.

The next match for Harvey (5-2) is Saturday at home against Wilbraham & Monson Academy
