Harvey's Tennis Teams Split with Forman

Harvey's tennis teams squared off against Forman's squads Saturday as each school team claimed a victory.

In a tight match from start to finish, the Harvey boys tennis team battled back for a hard fought 5-4 victory Saturday over The Forman School at Katonah Memorial Park.

Harvey fell behind 0-2 after losing the first two singles matches, but bounced back with wins at #3 and #4 singles.

In the #5 singles match, Harvey’s Tyler Levy of Chappaqua and Forman’s Chip Shappy battled long and hard with neither player gaining much of an advantage until finally Levy pulled out a hard fought 11-9 victory. Forman then came back to win both the #6 singles and the #1 doubles matches.

The Cavaliers, down 4-3, looked like they would suffer their first loss of the season when the #2 doubles team of David Weiner and Zach Schwartz quickly fell behind 1-5, but after a pep talk from Coach Marty Bernstein, they came storming back to win 9-7.

The final doubles match of the day would determine the winner. With everything on the line, the pairing of Levy and Bryan Krosser of Chappaqua gave Harvey its second win in a row to start the new season, a convincing 8-2 victory over their Forman counterparts.

Meanwhile, Harvey's girls varsity tennis team lost to Forman Saturday. Traveling to Litchfield, Conn., Harvey was swept in all four singles matches and also came up empty in doubles competition.

Freshman Janice Cai, an international student from China studying at Harvey, played in her first singles match and impressed her opponents. In keeping with its practice of recognizing an opponent, Forman awarded Cai a medallion for her “stellar sportsmanship and love for the game.”

Harvey coach Christine Cahill said Cai “really stepped up for the team by playing in her very first singles competition.” Coach Cahill also praised the efforts of the team’s junior captain Baily Hersh of Crompond.

“Baily showed tremendous growth on the court, not only mentoring her partner Cai but also showing true sportsmanship while dealing with her opponents,” said Coach Cahill.

Harvey’s next match is Wednesday, April 9, hosting Christian Heritage School at Katonah Memorial Park.
