No-Hitter Tops Harvey's Busy Sports Monday

A gem on Harvey's baseball diamond capped off a day of varsity victories from four teams.

Harvey’s Chavkin Hurls No-Hitter

Senior Mike Chavkin of Armonk pitched a 3-0, no-hit shutout Monday for the Harvey School’s varsity baseball team against The Master’s School of Conn. Chavkin had a perfect game heading into the seventh inning when he walked the lead-off batter. The next batter would hit a ball to deep left center field, but junior John Colangelo tracked it down for the catch. The following batter hit a hard ground ball to shortstop Corey Eisenband who threw to Ben Alper at second and then to Curtis Rattner at first for a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and clinch the no-hitter for Chavkin. Chavkin faced the minimum of 21 batters.

Chavkin, suffering some arm tightness recently, actually told his Coach Mike Rubenfeld earlier in the day that he was not sure how much he would be able to give the team in his start Monday. Coach Rubenfeld said he told his pitcher, “Just give us whatever you can.” As it turned out, Chavkin gave his team a lot more than his coach expected. “I was expecting to only get three or four innings from Chavkin,” said the coach, “but he showed toughness and grit, wanting to complete the game on his own.”

Chavkin stayed ahead of the hitters throughout the game and got some great defense to keep his pitch count down. Second baseman Ben Alper made two great stops to rob Master’s of hits. Curtis Rattner also played an outstanding first base, saving a few throws in the dirt, to keep Harvey errorless on the afternoon.

For Master’s, pitcher Nick Myers was just as dominant for the first five innings. He kept Harvey off balance and the Cavaliers could not get anything going on offense until the fifth inning. Austin Forman led off with a single to left field. Jackson Roberts then laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt moving Forman into scoring position. Ben Alper drove a hard hit single to right center field to bring home the first run of the game for Harvey. “Alper has been coming through all year for us and has really stepped his game up in these big spots with men on base,” said Coach Rubenfeld.

Harvey would add two more insurance runs in the sixth inning when Curtis Rattner led the inning off with a walk, Corey Eisenband followed with an infield single, and both runners advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Chavkin and Theo Rattner each plated a run on a fielder’s choice, giving Harvey a 3-0 lead that was plenty for Chavkin.

“We won on great pitching and defense,” said Coach Rubenfeld. “We were able to score three runs by playing small ball, but some days that is what it takes.”

The coach said he was both proud and happy for his pitcher. “Mike really stepped up for the team when he was needed, pitched through some soreness and pitched the best game of his high school career.”

Harvey is now 3-2 in the league and 6-4 overall. The Cavaliers will host Forman Wednesday in a non-league game. They had defeated Forman 6-3 earlier in the year.

Harvey Softball Defeats League Rival Christian Heritage

Eighth-grader Hana Cornell of Amawalk picked up a victory in only her second game on the mound for the Harvey School softball team as the Cavaliers won big over Christian Heritage 19-6 Monday. The win was Harvey’s first over Christian Heritage since the league championship in 2011.

Cornell, normally a first baseman, went all the way in the game shortened to four innings due to a curfew. She gave up four hits and struck out three, allowing four earned runs. Harvey’s coach Jackie Kelm said Cornell has done a good job on the varsity. “I'm quite pleased with the way Hana has been stepping up for us this season,” said the coach.

Sophomore center fielder Avary Carlson led Harvey with three hits, including a double and knocked in three runs. Fellow sophomore Taylor Williams stroked two hits and senior Silvana Alarcon picked up two RBI. Senior Anderson Greenwood and eighth-grader Lara Dimick each banged out a double and knocked in a run. Coach Kelm said Dimick made “an impressive debut at first base.”

The two teams battled to a 7-7 time by halftime.  Senior Audrey Rowe, who has committed to play for St. Michael's College next year, led the charge for Harvey with four goals and an assist.  Seniors Brittany Smith and Lily Brouwer each had two goals and two assists. Adding a goal apiece were seniors Julia Peraglia and Sammi Aloi, and junior Aliya Mayers.

Tiaja Downer had a breakout performance on defense and was a force to be reckoned with.  "Tiaja has proven herself as a vital part of our defense,” said Harvey coach Greg Janos. “She has been working hard to improve and has patiently waited for her chance to shine,” said the coach.  Downer, a junior, started the season as a midfielder but has now found her calling as defensive player.  Coach Janos said, “I’m extremely proud of Tiaja and how hard she has worked. She has earned her spot in the lineup."

Harvey, who had defeated Chase 13-2 earlier this season, found its league rival to be a tougher opponent this second meeting. Coach Janos believes the word is out that Harvey is the team to be beat. He said, “Teams get extra excited to play us because they want to be the team that beats us.” “We need to outmatch the intensity of our opponents and just play our style of lacrosse,” Janos said. “Our remaining games will simply come down to will and not skill, which is fine with me, because my girls have miles of heart.”

Harvey Boys Lax Gets League Win

The Harvey School boys varsity lacrosse team picked up a 12-6 road victory Monday over the Forman School in Litchfield, Conn.

The Cavaliers struck early, scoring a pair of goals in the first 90 seconds when sophomore Michael DePass scored off an assist from fellow sophomore Javen Stepp-Davis and junior Tom Gattuso of Mount Kisco scored on a solo crease roll. With the game tied at 2-2 later in the first quarter, Harvey’s Keith Lambert of Cortlandt Manor scored to put the Cavaliers in the lead, but the Lions tied the game before the quarter ended.

In the second quarter, the Cavaliers extended their lead with solo goals from Gattuso and Robbie VanRaamsdonk. Meanwhile, senior Tyler Gadigian of Katonah led the defense with 11 saves in net, shutting out Forman for the quarter.

With Harvey up 5-3 at intermission, the Lions came out strong at the start of the second half and tied the game at five. But it was all Harvey the rest of the way as DePass scored a second goal to break the tie, shifting the momentum to Harvey as freshman Sam Bocklet’s impressive shot and keen awareness enabled him to total three goals and three assists. Gattuso finished the game with five goals and one assist. Stepp-Davis and sophomore Jackson Hammerstein of South Salem helped the offense with an assist each while VanRaamsdonk added a pair of assists.

Harvey has now won two in a row and will take on Watkinson in West Hartford Saturday.
