Visiting Artists to Work with Harvey Students

It is common for students in high school art classes to visit museums to view the work of renowned artists, but Harvey School students will soon benefit from a new school initiative that brings the art and the artists themselves to the campus to discuss their work.

The Fine Arts Department at The Harvey School will host painter Thomas Huber as the first artist in its inaugural Visiting Artist Lecture Series Nov. 15. Huber’s abstract works have been shown nationally and internationally. They have been reviewed in The New York Times, among others. Currently, Huber will be acting as curator of the exhibition "Salon Des REfUSE" at the Garrison Art Center in Garrison, NY in August 2014. He is also a musician who has performed at Saunders Farm in Garrison with members of a large collaborative group called “decomposer.”

Fine Arts Department Chair Angelika Rinnhofer says the new lecture series will allow Harvey students to see close-up the selected works of emerging and mid-career artists who will speak about their art practice, their methods and their influences. Huber and other visiting artists will be available to answer questions from the audience following each lecture, and will spend the remaining day observing art classes and interact with students.

Ms. Rinnhofer said, “The series is designed to give insight into an artist’s life and motivation, her/his accomplishments and challenges, and to educate members of the Harvey community about developments in contemporary art practices.”

Each event in the series will take place in the gallery of the Walker Center for the Arts on The Harvey School campus.
