Helping Seniors be Safe at Home

A seminar provided local seniors with tips on how to grow older at home and remain independent longer.

'Always being prepared' was the lesson at the Bedford Hills Community House during the Senior Home Safety Seminar. The presentation was held at the Bedford Hills Community House Wednesday and was a joint effort between the Bedford Department of Recreation and Parks, Bedford Police Department and local emergency service organizations.

"It's a culmination of our preparation for giving out information on how to protect seniors," explained Lt. Robert Mazurak of the Bedford Police Department. "There's plenty of handouts and we'll be giving out smoke detectors, CO2 detectors and replacement batteries to all the people here."

Presenters shared important tips on keeping up-to-date medical information in the house, the proper use of a fire extinguisher and first-aid information from the American Red Cross of Westchester. The seniors in attendance were also treated to a lunch catered by Bueti's Deli.

Seniors expressed their appreciation of the volunteer groups, who lent their time to teach emergency preparedness to the elders in the neighborhood.

"It's great to see all of the groups working together to benefit us," said Selma Grotheer. "They're really intent on making Bedford a community, not just a place to live."
