The nonprofit Mianus Gorge Preserve was founded in 1953 to protect the area's more than 350-year-old hemlock forest, earning itself the distinctions of being the nation's first Nature Conservancy Land Project and National Natural History Landmark.

Today, after more than 50 years of dedication, the preserve protects more than 700 acres of woodland and watershed, which provides more than 150,000 New Yorkers and Connecticutians their water. The preserve also features miles upon miles of hiking trails.
