About: The Bedford Historical Society is a privately funded, membership-based nonprofit dedicated to…More preserving Bedford's historic sites. It is housed in the newly restored Bedford Store building.</p> <p>Founded in 1916, it took charge of several buildings around the Bedford Village Green that were far older than itself, including: the 1807 Bedford Free Library, formerly the Bedford Academy; the 1829 Stone Jug schoolhouse; the 1838 post office; the 1838 general store; the 1857 Jackson House; the 1906 Lounsbery Building, once the village A&P; and the 1787 courthouse.</p> <p>It also protects the two acres surrounding a town landmark — the Bedford Oak — and runs two museums, one in the schoolhouse and the other in the courthouse, both of which are in the Village Green.</p> <p>The society sponsors a variety of educational tours, programs and exhibitions that celebrate Bedford's historical treasures. </p> <p><b>Contact:</b> Evelyne Ryan is the society's executive director.
