Independence Party Announces Bedford Endorsements

The Westchester County Independence Party announced on June 4 that it has endorsed Chris Burdick for Town Supervisor, Meredith Black for Town Board, Julie Hallowell Vulpescu for Town Board, Simone Shapiro for Town Clerk and Judy Aydelott for Town Justice.

The Independence Party also endorsed Peter Harckham for re-election to the County Legislature, District 2. The endorsement is significant in that no Republican has won a contested Town election without the support of Westchester's Independence Party and this is the first time that the Independence Party has endorsed all Bedford’s Democratic candidates.

In announcing his support in a letter to Bedford Independence Party members, the chairman of the Westchester Independence Party, Dr. Giulio Cavallo explained that the endorsements were made “following a thorough review” and that the candidates “are the designated candidates of the Independence Party and we back them enthusiastically.” Dr. Cavallo cited Peter Harckham’s “distinguished record of public service by cutting taxes and reducing spending, while at the same time protecting our families and safeguarding our environment,” and Chris Burdick’s experience as a five year Town Board member, “who has worked tirelessly to help bring good services, hold down taxes, and be responsive.”

Chris Burdick appreciatively greeted the news, “We are absolutely delighted, humbled and honored with the endorsement. It means a great deal to us that the Independence Party, which goes to great lengths to support the best qualified candidates following a rigorous review process, has made this decision.”

Dr. Cavallo also highlighted Judy Aydelott for over 30 years of experience as a trial attorney and “her commitment to Bedford's town court being a model of integrity, courteousness and fairness”, Meredith Black’s credentials as a land use attorney, currently serving on Bedford’s Zoning Board of Appeals, “who would work to simplify and clarify procedures, and enhance transparency in Town government”, long-time resident Julie Hallowell Vulpescu’s pledge “to work to improve Town government effectiveness and accessibility, and address issues of emergency preparedness and safety” and Simone Shapiro as “a tireless problem-solver, who would seek to expand services provided by the Clerk’s office”

“The Independence Party endorses candidates based on their qualifications and their record – not their party affiliation. We know that these candidates are good for Bedford,” Dr. Cavallo said. The election for all of the offices mentioned in the announcement is November 5, 2013.
