Harvey Welcomes Students from China at the School’s 98th Convocation

For the 340 students at The Harvey School Tuesday, the first day was particularly exciting and new as the traditional headmaster’s convocation included a warm welcome to six Chinese students who represent the first participants in Harvey’s new International Student Program.

In conducting Harvey’s 98th convocation, Headmaster Barry Fenstermacher took the occasion to acknowledge the six students from mainland China, noting they will live in campus dormitories during the school week and spend weekends and holidays with host families throughout the school year. Headmaster Fenstermacher called the international students “courageous young people” for leaving their families and going to a new school in a foreign country. “They will help teach us as they learn here at Harvey,” the Headmaster said. The six, three sophomores and three freshmen will be full-fledged members of the student body and graduate with their classes in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

As he does at each convocation, the Headmaster offered the entire student body advice on how to be successful in school academically and socially, placing special emphasis on Harvey’s expectations for how students should treat each other.

After faculty introductions, the Headmaster left the students with one final message. “Let’s look forward to a year of giving and sharing greatness,” he said before dismissing the students for their first period class.

The Harvey School is a coeducational college-preparatory school for students in grades 6 through 12.
