Bedford Distinguished Speakers Series

"Power  Couples" Continues Next Thursday

Please mark your calendar for next Thursday evening, June 3rd, at 7:30 PM for the next installment in the Distinguished Speaker Series at St. Matthews. This event is free, and open to the public, so please join us and feel free to pass this message onto your friends.

Our speakers will be Lord Mark and Trish Malloch-Brown, who will be interviewed by Michael Elliott, the Editor of TIME International. This on-stage conversation with Mark and Trish will be the second in a series of evening events featuring  "Power Couples" discussing their lives, their life work, and what matters, in a lively interview format.

As The Rev. Terry Elsberry commented to the Record Review: "We welcome the entire community to join us for these special evenings. We look forward to building on the great success of our first 'Power Couples' event with Jayni and Chevy Chase, which was an inspiring and enjoyable evening.

Power couples are those who exercise dynamic leadership, sometimes together and sometimes through their individual efforts, to help make the world a better place. We'll learn more about how they do it-their methods, dreams, and aspirations-and gain insights along the way."

We'll also surely get some fascinating insights into global affairs, and recent financial developments in Europe and the new administration in United Kingdom.

The Malloch-Browns lived in Katonah and were parishioners at St. Matthews when Mark was serving the United Nations. For six years he was Administrator of the UNDP, leading the UN's development efforts around the world. He was subsequently promoted Deputy Secretary-General and Chief of Staff for the UN under Kofi Annan. They moved to London when he tapped to join Gordon Brown's cabinet as Minister of State in the Foreign Office. Today he is Chief Advisor to the World Economic Forum, as well as consulting to a number of international companies. He is also chair of the Royal Africa Society and on a number of non-profit and advisory boards. He is a member of the House of Lords and was knighted in 2007.

Trish Malloch-Brown is a consultant to non-government organizations, advising on the development of projects, programs, fundraising strategies, and moderating seminars and events. She is on the board of numerous organizations in the UK and US and was the vice-chair of the Refugees International for 10 years.  Board commitments include Refugees International, St. Matthews C of E Primary School, The Sustain Organisation, Women's Refugee Commission and the Columbia Undergraduate Scholars Program (CUSP) at Columbia University.  She is a co-founder of the Washington Circle, an outreach group targeted at women in Washington, D.C., who are interested in humanitarian affairs.

While living in Katonah, NY, she was co-founder of Cashmere for Kashmir and a committee member of the Bedford-Katonah Tsunami Relief.  Trish holds a Masters of International Affairs from Columbia University and has a B.A. in Political Science from Denison University.

The conversation will be moderated by Michael Elliott, deputy managing editor of TIME, and also editor of TIME International. Since Sept. 11, 2001, he has also been one of TIME's principal writers on the international aspects of the war on terrorism and has written many of TIME's cover stories on the ongoing crisis. He was previously editor of Newsweek International, and was political editor and Washington bureau chief of The Economist.  The author of three books, Elliott was born in Liverpool, England, and took two degrees at Oxford University. Prior to his career in journalism, he was a member of the Central Policy Review Staff in Britain's Cabinet Office, and before that he spent eight years teaching in universities in the United States and the United Kingdom, ending his academic career with a tenured position at the London School of Economics.

The evening will begin with a reception at 7:30 PM, followed by the speaking program at 8. Refreshments will be served. There is no charge for admission although donations at the door are most welcome. For information, call the Parish Office, 234-9636.
