Pondering About my Pond

After another soaking rain, my pond begins to inch closer to my back door once again.

I woke up this morning to the sounds of the rain pelting against the skylights above my bed. Looking out my bedroom terrace doors, I began pondering about my pond. When I moved to Bedford just six months ago, our pond welcomed us by merging with the house. While a reoccurrence of our welcome to the neighborhood flood seemed unlikely and only accomplished under specific circumstances, the thought is always there.

During Hurricane Irene, the pond became the second topic asked about when family and friends inquired about our status. First was “do you have power?” and that was an easy no. The second question was “how is the pond?” and that was an easy, “the pond is okay and staying put”. Well, after three days of rain, the pond is inching its way toward our house once again.  Although my husband Gary swears that the pond will never merge with the house again, I now have my doubts.
