Today Marks 80 Years for Pound Ridge Volunteer Fire Dept.

The Pound Ridge Volunteer Fire Department was born 80 years ago today, according to an historical description on its website.

The fire department was created on Aug. 25, 1933 after 32 men at a meeting gave a willingness to become firefighters, the historical description notes. It also states that the meeting, held at town hall, was called by a 3-person committee: Robert Bender, Vernon Bailey and Mott Pettit, with Bailey as chairman.

The idea for a fire department had previously been discussed, the account notes, and fundraising was done for an apparatus fund, with the first fire truck being delivered the next year.

The fire department would face challenges in its early years, according to the historical description, including its own firehouse burning down in 1936 and a wartime drop in membership. The early years gave way, and today the Pound Ridge Fire Department's presence can be seen in Scotts Corners, responding to calls and marching in parades of neighboring firefighters, such as Bedford and Mount Kisco.
