Hearing Tonight on Law Change for Parking Near Katonah Church

The Bedford Town Board will hold a public hearing tonight on legislation that would allow for parking on sections of Katonah's Valley Road during any religious service. Current law only allows for parking on Sundays.

The road is near St. Mary's, a local Roman Catholic Church, and last month several residents told Patch that they received parking tickets on a Saturday while they went to a St. Mary's evening mass. Police Lt. Jeffrey Dickan told Patch at the time that tickets were issued by police in response to a Valley Road resident's complaint.

Supervisor Lee Roberts, at the board's July 2 meeting, noted that there was recently controversy over parking during church session, according to video of the meeting, and added that the church has Saturday evening mass and some weddings and funerals.

According to the legislation's text, the proposal affects the portions of Valley Road that are at Valley Edge, from Valley Edge to New Street and beginning at the Presbyterian Church's driveway and then going east to Bedford Road. Currently, parking is only allowed on Sundays.

The hearing starts at 7:45 p.m. at the Bedford Town House, which is located at 321 Bedford Road in Bedford Hills. To read a copy of the legislation, click here.
