Pound Ridge Garden Club Daffodil Sale About to Begin!

The appearance of golden daffodils in bloom is one way we know spring has arrived. The beginning of the annual Pound Ridge Garden Club Daffodil sale is another traditional mark of the season. The sale, which raises money for the club’s local beautification projects, begins on Saturday, April 19 just outside the Scotts Corners Market where from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., club members will be taking orders for the bulbs you’ll plant in the autumn. Order your bulbs now when you can see the places that could use some spring cheer; the bulbs will be delivered to your door in early October.  The bulb sale continues on April 25 and May 2 and 3 in front of Scotts Corners Market and on April 26 at Pound Ridge Elementary School from 11 to 3 as part of Pound Ridge’s Go Green Day. Order Sheets, plant descriptions and pictures are also available by calling Virginia Todar at 764-5509.

New daffodil varieties this year include spicy-scented ‘Goose Green’ with creamy white petals framing a small cup of green ringed with yellow and red and ‘Pink Charm’ with cups in a peach-apricot color. The Daffodil 100 Collection is a returning favorite. Each bag of 100 bulbs contains at least 85 varieties. Two alliums will be offered: the late-blooming Allium Unifolium with loose heads of lavender-pink flowers touched with white; and Caeruleum, with 1 1/2-inch heads of steel blue flowers that should be planted in dense clusters for best effect.

Still in doubt about the wisdom on planting daffodils? Remember, all varieties of daffodils are deer- and rodent-resistant. Plant the bulbs in the fall in a sunny to partly sunny spot and allow the foliage to turn yellow before you cut it. The blooms that result will come back year after year. This year marks the 39th year in which the garden club and daffodils are intertwined in the goal of bringing cheer to the community. Mass daffodil planting by the club began in 1975, and since then numerous areas around town have been beautified.
