South Salem Native Wraps Up Duke Soccer Career with One Last Honor
One of the finest student-athletes in Harvey School history is winding down her Duke University career, but not before earning another prestigious award.
Maddy Haller, a former top scholar and star athlete at The Harvey School, wrapped up her collegiate athletic career with yet another honor last night when Duke University’s women’s soccer team held its annual team banquet in Durham, NC to officially close the curtain on the 2012 campaign. Haller, who will graduate this May, was a key player on defense for the Blue Devils who advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.
At last night’s banquet, the staff presented the Coaches Award to Haller and fellow senior Nicole Lipp. A four-year starter on the defensive end, Haller completed her career helping lead Duke to 41 shutouts. Duke’s defense tallied six shutouts in 2012 as Haller saw action in all 23 contests.
Earlier this winter, Haller, a product of South Salem and now living in Durham, earned All-ACC Academic Team honors for the third straight year. An HVAL All-Star in soccer for The Harvey School, Haller played left outside back for Duke. As a team, the Blue Devils advanced to the Elite Eight in 2012 with a 15-6-2 overall and 5-3-2 mark in the very challenging ACC. In 2011, Haller and her teammates came close to winning the NCAA championship, losing 1-0 to Stanford in the title game.
