Bedford Officials Preparing for Storm

Plus, what you can do to stay informed during the storm.

Bedford officials and staff are doing all they can to prepare for what some meteorologists are saying could be the worst storm to hit the eastern United States in more than 70 years.

"We're stocking up on water, we have our generators and trucks fueled and we are preparing for temporary stop signs in the event that major intersections—such as Route 35 near I-684—are out of service," said Supervisor Lee V.A. Roberts on Friday.

Roberts also said highway workers were out cleaning catch basins, and clearing any debris that needed to be removed. The town's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), has been mobilized and is reaching out to homebound seniors to help them prepare.

In the event of widespread power outages, town hall, which has generator backup, will serve as a place where locals can charge their electronic devices and pick up water and dry ice, if necessary. The process will be self-service.

"We've also reached out to our fire departments to serve as information centers to help with communications in each hamlet," said Roberts. The emergency command center at the Bedford Hills Fire Department is also available as a communications center.

Bedford police sent out a Nixle reminder on Friday about preparing an emergency kit for families. Read it here.

County and state officials are also gearing up for the storm. Gov. Cuomo declared a state of emergency in New York in preparation for the storm's potential impact—a state of emergency mobilizes resources to local governments that otherwise are restricted to state use only and suspends regulations that would impede rapid response, Cuomo said in a press release.
