State of Emergency Lifted, Road Closures List Shrinks

Town officials continue to urge residents to use caution on local roads.

Updated, Sept. 1, 3 p.m.

The Town of Bedford has lifted the state of emergency, as of noon on Wednesday, and the the list of closed roads is getting smaller.

The number of roads that were completely closed or partially blocked has shrunk from over 40 down to 27 roads. Most major intersections have also had power restored, including the traffic lights at Route 35 and Route 22, making travel safer for residents.

Town officials and highway workers have been working around the clock to clear roads, but it's slow going, said David Gabrielson, town councilman.

"I've seen our own highway department out today and the town has contracted with outside tree services to come in and help," he said, after running into Kevin Winn, the town's public works commissioner on Croton Lake Road in Katonah (see photo posted with this story).

"But crews have to wait, in many cases, for NYSEG to clear live wires before the trees can be cut and cleared."

The town of Bedford had previously issued road advisories, asking residents not to drive unless absolutely necessary. But today many people are out driving, needing to get to work, or to buy water and supplies for powerless homes.

At noon on Tuesday, Bedford police sent out an advisory urging residents to use caution while crossing intersections with no functioning traffic lights.

Here's an updated list of roads, as of Sept. 1 that remain fully or partially blocked with no thru access:
