The Bedford Police Department welcomed its newest officer on Jan. 24 when Douglas Romeo started his training.
The 35-year-old Mahopac resident brings 9 years of experience—five in New York City and most recently, four years as an officer for the town of Carmel. After he completes his training, he'll be assigned to the operations division of the patrol services bureau, the department's announcement said.
Romeo's hiring is the latest in a series of changes at the police department—most notably, the retirement of six officers at the end of 2012.
"We are actively screening candidates for our existing and anticipated vacancies," Hayes said in a recent interview with Patch.
The process should be completed by the end of March, Hayes said.
